I am so honored and thrilled to share another dream come true. I have always been driven by the desire to empower and uplift others, especially those who have been facing oppression and injustice. It has been a dream of mine to not only preserve our identity through the language of these precious stitches but also to employ Palestinian women in hopes of preserving the art of Tatreez. It gives me great joy to share with you something so close to my heart.
I met a beautiful soul named Rasha at the beginning of this year who lives in Jenin, she’s been a great source of encouragement, support, and a connection to Palestinian hand embroidery. I was looking to hire women to embroider a project I had in mind which is now a reality because of Rasha. I wanted to replicate motifs that have great meaning and significance. Rasha introduced me to Umm Firas and her team who live in the Jenin refugee camp and they were happy to help bring this idea to fruition.
The first motif is inspired by a 1930’s Beit Dajan, Jaffa dress which is adorned in jewel-tone threads and cypress trees. Sourced from “Traditional Palestinian Costume” by Hanan Karaman Munayyer.
The second motif is inspired by the Intifada dress which was born in 1987. The Palestinian flag motif symbolizes resistance and self-determination. Sourced from “Threads of Identity “ by Widad Kamel Kawar
Each pullover is adorned by an embroidered olive branch peace sign patch on the front laying on the heart.
It gives me great joy to bring these powerful symbols to you in hopes of inspiring the world and a Free Palestine.
Each piece will be hand embroidered by Umm Firas and her team in Jenin, Palestine. Each piece is made to order and will take roughly 4 weeks to be ready for shipment.
